Why I Became a Doctor

Since my childhood, I have grown up in the Italian way, in a family where multiple generations live under one roof. I was close and familiar with my uncle (was, because he left us in 2021), who was like a fourth brother to me. He was funny, sensitive, unconventional, and loved music, travel, and especially Italy. He also had a slight intellectual disability. Unfortunately, he was often sick. His health problems led to many questions and concerns in the family, especially for his mother, my grandmother, who was like a second mother to me. No one seemed to understand the cause of his suffering. This is why I wanted to become a doctor. I wanted to find the cause of his ailments, relieve him, and indirectly, ease my grandmother’s worries.

The Reality

I began my medical studies, enthusiastic about the anatomy, physiology, and patient communication courses. But very quickly, I was disillusioned by my practical hospital internships, which revealed a different reality than I had imagined. Stubborn, perseverant, I continued my studies for a total of nine years until I became an assistant doctor. I was fortunate to work with kind-hearted caregivers who were dedicated to their mission and full of joy (especially the palliative care team at Orbe). I was able to accompany patients, sometimes with minor ailments, sometimes in critical phases of their lives. I found meaning in my profession by offering patients and their families empathetic listening, answering their questions, and providing some comfort. I have also sometimes made mistakes, lacking in listening, patience, and tact. These experiences have helped me grow.

My Career Path

This intense practice allowed me to learn “Evidence-Based Medicine” and, above all, to discover the complexity of the relationship between the patient, caregiver, and healthcare team. Exhausted and feeling out of place, I decided to end this training. Turning the page wasn’t quick and easy, as not everything was black and white. Deeper questions then arose. This allowed me to begin a self-reflection and progress in my quest. First, needing a break, I worked for three years in agriculture, market gardening, and organic catering. It was in the calm and with this distance, while uprooting Rumex (plants, formidable invaders of agriculture), that ideas began to germinate in this fog, and my professional retraining could begin. Being sporty, loving to motivate my friends to follow me, and always being out in nature, I started training in sports, initially as a running instructor (coordinated by the Swiss Federal Office of Sport) to be able to give informed advice. This opened the doors to several training courses in movement, where I could combine sports and health with a very preventive and postural focus, which has become a true passion.

And Now

In 2021, I started my independent activity as a coach for physical activity, first in Neuchâtel and then in the Delémont region. This allows me to apply my knowledge in medicine and movement science. Above all, this profession offers me the opportunity to promote health as I had imagined, by taking the necessary time with my participants and making them active in their own health. Since then, I have been helping both sporty and less sporty people to improve their physical condition and self-confidence, with joy and awareness of movement. I still want to bring deeper skills in the area of postural approaches and touch therapy.
